The Grand Canyon walking track at Blackheath was fully reopened from Saturday July 3rd. The Grand Canyon Track is a very popular walk for guests and visitors of Jemby-Rinjah. Major restoration works have been underway on selected sections of the track since March 2009, funded by both NSW State government, and Federal government (under the Jobs Fund initiative). The current phase of works is now complete. Further works on other sections may continue if additional funding is secured.
Constructed over 100 years ago, the Grand Canyon track was the first walking track to be built into a Blue Mountains Canyon and is listed on the State Heritage register. With over 30,000 people a year now walking the track, repair and restoration works were essential.
Over the last year, skilled teams working in remote sites have been involved in detailed restoration works such as recutting stone steps, repairing stone staircases and installing new stepping stones in selected sections of the track.
Accessed through ferny rainforest gullies from either Evans Lookout or Neates Glen car park, the track offers a unique opportunity to walk through the very special surrounds of a Blue Mountains canyon. Visitors should expect a 3 to 4 hour circuit walk with many steps, steep sections and creek crossings.
